PHGS
2021 NEWSLETTER
Dear Member,
Trust this finds you well and fine. The coronavirus pandemic that has swept across us has affected all of our lives, the country, and the world. Friends and family have been taken down by the virus, and the impact on us at the PHGS has affected our members, our finances, the day-to-day running of the club, our traditional and private events. However, we are optimistic that better times are ahead.
At the 2020 March board meeting we decided to repaint the downstairs bar. Two days later we shut down the services at the club, following state guidelines. Little did we know and plan then for what happened to the infrastructure of the club that occurred in the next few months. From the redecorating of the bar we went onwards to ripping up floor tiles, demolishing old kitchen units, replacing flooring in the kitchen and behind the bar and the walk-in, tearing apart old kitchen plumbing, new wall and plumbing, deep cleaning, new bathroom door, new ceilings in kitchen and bathrooms, new grease trap, new kitchen surfaces, shelving, painted and cleaned stairway, new handrail and ramp at entrance, a refurbished upstairs bar, new soda lines and carbonator, to new flagpoles, an espresso machine, rearranged pictures, a section of the outside siding replaced, the courtyard was sorted out, there was even some work done on the gutters etc.
These were largest changes to the club in 30 years. The local health inspector lady from Ledge Light who inspected the first floor kitchen this past Fall commented with a smile that we’d: “Left the 1970s and were now in the 21st century…”
The work and commitment by many volunteers made possible the summer food court sessions that went from June to September. A new specific menu was created and it was an amazing success. High tops and chairs were purchased and donated. We then progressed into a successful fall Fish and Chips. We are now in the lent/spring season of Fish And Chips, and have increased take out orders to about 70% of our output. This has all been all done with great detail and respect to the health and safety of ourselves, and our patrons.
At the bar we modified our usual opening hours to restrictive schedules in the early summer, and from there we are now open 7 days a week from basically 10am-10pm, following state and Ledge Light guidelines.
We lost the Feast of the Holy Ghost in 2020, yet we are hoping to have our signature event back this year. We have a couple of weddings and graduations booked for our hall and courtyard this summer. Please look out for announcements of events and progress via email and website, or come down to the club and find out and participate yourself.
We have taken a financial hit yet what we have done and succeeded in doing has made this a year to recall with pride. We’ve kept scholarships going, the place is in great shape and we have gotten through 2020 and into 2021 with teamwork and high abilities and with friendship and some laughs. It should be emphasized that it was surely a year of record donations of time and money from members.
Just remind all dues are due! On April 1st the card entry will require a new card for members and the $60 membership fee for 2021-2022 is well… due. The Lifetime card will remain valid. Thanks to all who have prepaid. If you are ready to renew you can drop by or mail dues to the club. Please recall that contiguous annual membership is required to qualify for eventual Lifetime membership (Determined by number of consecutive years a member plus age adding up to 90). Donations are also a big drive and engine behind the PHGS and if you can, please do!
The Board thanks all. Heart felt thanks. Despite the travails of 2020 we all at the PHGS face a future in a good place, and hope and trust 2021 is a better year for us all.
Yours truly,
The Officers and Board of Directors 2021
